Tombs from the 10th-12th century

monuments

In the forest behind the village of Lewino, there is a complex of 16 burial mounds that were built in the X-XII centuries AD. These earthen mounds, covered with glacial boulders, have bases with both rectangular and oval shapes, reaching heights of up to 3 meters. An interesting aspect is that all the rectangular-shaped mounds were arranged with sides facing the cardinal directions where individual graves were found. Inside these graves, knives, spurs, shields, and swords were discovered, indicating that the contemporary elite was laid to rest in this place. These items served as symbols of power, accessible only to the local ruler, and are also characteristic of Viking culture. What is remarkable is that the cemetery has never fallen victim to looting, and archaeological studies have been ongoing since 2004. The only unresolved question remains the location of the contemporary center of power, whose elite was buried in Lewino.
