The Gdynia Aquarium (from 1971 to 2003 known as the Oceanographic Museum and Marine Aquarium of the Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia), which holds the status of a zoological garden, was opened on June 21, 1971, although attempts to establish it were made in the 1920s and 1930s. The Gdynia Aquarium showcases museum exhibitions on oceanography and a rich collection of living specimens of fauna and flora from seas across all climate zones. The aquarium also develops educational activities. In 2005, a new cinema-conference room and laboratories for conducting classes were opened. In 2007, a room where visitors can dip their hands into an aquarium and touch fish was made available. The aquarium houses about 1,500 living organisms from around the world, including 250 species of animals – fish, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates.
