The Gable House in Orłowo - A Trace of Dutch Tradition on the Żuławy

monuments

The gable house in Orłowo, built in 1798 by Gerhardt Hildebrandt for Jakub Schulte, is one of the best-preserved examples of traditional Dutch architecture on the Żuławy. Located in the northern part of the village (formerly known as Orłowskie Pole), it was the central element of a Dutch farm. Initially built with a wooden granary and barn, today it adjoins a brick barn from 1914, separated by a high fire wall.

The house is a wooden structure on a stone foundation, with a timbered gallery on the front side, supported by six wooden columns on stone bases and two timbered side walls. A characteristic feature of the gallery is the ornate gable, which harmonizes with the vertical cladding of the main part of the building. On both sides of the gallery, there are small gables that add symmetry to the entire structure.

Although the house was partially destroyed in a fire in 1957, it was rebuilt in the early 1960s. To this day, it remains a valuable example of Dutch construction, combining aesthetics with practical solutions characteristic of areas prone to flooding.
