The Gable House in Orłowo: A Masterpiece of Classicism and Flood Protection Engineering

monuments

The gable house, known as the "Tujski House", is a unique monument of the Żuławy region, built in 1802 by the master carpenter Peter Loewen for Cornelius Jansson. The building is located on an artificially raised mound called a terp, a solution designed to protect the house from flooding, which was crucial in areas prone to inundation.

The house is built on a T-shaped plan, on a stone-brick foundation. The wooden structure with half-timbered walls filled with yellow brick is impressive with its classical architectural detail. A characteristic feature of the building are two porches. The main one, facing south-east, is supported by eight columns with Ionic capitals, placed on stone bases. The second, smaller porch, is located on the opposite side of the building and is supported by four columns. Both porches are decorated with a molded cornice, and the beams of the porches bear inscriptions with the name of the builder.

The gables of the building are vertically clad, and the roof, topped with square and cylindrical chimneys, is distinguished by additional gables. A unique detail is the rich door joinery - the classical front door attracts attention with its intricate decorations.
