The Devil's Stone by Lake Kamienne – The Mystery and Beauty of Kashubia

nature

In the northern part of the Mirachowo Forests, on the shore of Lake Kamienne, lies one of the largest glacial erratic boulders in Pomerania – the Devil's Stone. This impressive rock, with dimensions (circumference 17 m, height 3 m, width 4.75 m, and length 5 m), is a protected natural monument. A distinctive crack splitting the stone has also led to it being called the Split or the Giant.

The origin of the boulder is attributed to glacial activity, but its majesty and imposing appearance have inspired local legends. According to one of them, the stone was carried by the devil, who planned to build a dam across the lake. However, he did not complete his task – either due to lack of time or out of anger after a failed attempt to capture a human soul – and abandoned the boulder, leaving it on the lake shore. Another story suggests that the devil still resides inside the stone, guarding it for eternity.
