Tadeusz Wenda - A Mural in Honour of the Builder of Gdynia Port

culturally

A mural dedicated to engineer Tadeusz Wenda, the builder of Gdynia Port, adorns the facade of a building at 11 Władysława IV Street in Gdynia. Its impressive surface, covering 210 square meters, was created based on the concept of artist Krzysztof Iwański, in cooperation with the Gdynia City Museum. Work on the mural lasted several months, and the artwork aims not only to commemorate this important figure but also to popularize his history and achievements. Engineer Tadeusz Wenda, although less well-known today, is one of the heroes of Gdynia's history. His life is a fascinating story that begins in Warsaw, where he graduated from the Imperial Warsaw University and obtained a degree in communication engineering in St. Petersburg. He worked on many projects in Russia, including the construction of ports in Windau and Revel. After returning to Poland during World War I, in 1920 he began working as the construction manager of the port in Gdynia, which became a symbol of the development of the Second Polish Republic. As the head of the Technical and Construction Department of the Maritime Office, Wenda led the development of the port until 1932, creating the foundation for the city's economic development. In his honor, among other things, Basin II (Engineer Wenda's Basin) in the port, a street, and the Mechanical School Complex in Gdynia's Grabówek were named.
