St. Nicholas Church in Szemud: A Surprising 18th-Century Architecture
The first mention of the parish in Szemud dates back to the 14th century - before 1370, a small chapel stood by the road leading to the cemetery, serving as the nucleus of the future parish. The current church, built in the 18th century, is a valuable historical monument with a long history. Inside, there is a Baroque holy water stoup, and on the outer wall, you can see the epitaph of Kacper Uberfeld, a Gdańsk patrician, dating from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The church in Szemud has undergone several key stages in its history. In 1596, it was handed over to the parish priest from Kielno (according to some sources, this event took place as early as 1454). In 1870, a so-called local vicar was established in Szemud, and in 1908 the church received the status of an independent parish.
