Sand Settlement
It is believed that the name of the fishing settlement "Na Piaskach" originates from the colloquial term for the road running through it, along which characteristic brick houses typical for Pomerania were erected. This settlement has been connected with Oksywie for centuries, as confirmed by ancient maps. Its proximity to dunes and the sea meant that the houses without basements were systematically buried by the dunes and inundated by the sea. Despite the infertile soil, this area offered unlimited opportunities for obtaining heating materials, mainly peat, commonly used in stoves instead of expensive coal during those times. Drinking water was brought from a nearby water spring, which is still located just behind the Maritime Office building. During the construction of the port, this place underwent a radical transformation. The first gas station in Gdynia was built here, along with impressive tenement houses inhabited by port builders. Engineer Tadeusz Wenda lived in one of the houses on Węglowa Street. There was also the famous inn of the Wojewski family, located by the legendary old oak tree opposite Portowa Street 3. The jellies and spirits served there even tempted residents of Gdańsk, who gladly visited this place.
