Monument to the People of the Sea

The Monument to the People of the Sea stands in the area of the Gdynia port, near Gombrowicz Promenade, next to the Maritime Station and the Port Captaincy. Its solemn unveiling took place on July 22, 1965. The monument bears the inscription "To the People of the Sea," as well as a quote from the 12th century by Gallus Anonymous, translated by Franciszek Fenikowski: "Today, sons do not fear storms or the roar of the sea waves." The monument consists of four rocks, extracted during the deepening of the Gdynia port's water area. According to an ancient legend, these are the kind of stones that giants, known as Stolemy, who inhabited Oksywie, used to throw. Each of these rocks symbolizes one of the four maritime professions: dockworkers, sailors, fishermen, and shipyard workers.
