Modern building of the Musical Theatre
The theater was founded on Oct. 28, 1957 as the Music Theatre in Gdansk. The current theater was built in the place burned and transferred after a fire in Gdansk Theatre Coast. The authors were the architects of the building: Hops and Daniel Joseph Olędzki. The Act established foundation for the construction of the theater was laid on April 30, 1972, and the official opening took place on 21 July 1979. The first premiere of the new building, "Krakowiacy and mountaineers", took place on 8 December 1979. Currently, the theater is one of the most modern and spacious - it has the second largest stage in Poland. During the fifty years of existence the theater has prepared 284 release: musicals, operettas, cartoons, concerts and chamber music performances. In November 2010, the first reconstruction of the theater since its construction. Completion of the reconstruction is scheduled for 30 April 2013. Theater area will increase to 19 000 square meters, and the building will receive a new architectural shape. Theater is visited annually by more than 100,000 spectators. The Musical Theatre annually dispenses Polish Film Festival, Shakespeare Festival and Ladies Jazz Festival.
