Krokowa Castle - History and Heritage of the von Krockow Family

monuments

Krokowa Castle, dating back to the 14th century, is a beautiful architectural gem in the heart of Kashubia. Initially a defensive knightly residence, over the years it transformed into a representative residence of the von Krockow family. Built in a picturesque valley cut by a stream, with a deep moat, the castle once served as a stronghold of Northern Kashubia. Its walls and two corner towers, which add majesty to the building, have survived to this day.

From the 16th century, the castle served both defensive and representative functions, hosting kings such as Sigismund III Vasa, and survived a period of transformation as a result of the ongoing development of artillery. In the 18th century, the castle underwent another reconstruction, becoming a luxurious residence. In the years 1945-1990, it was nationalized and served various public functions until it was rebuilt and reopened in 1990 as a luxury hotel and museum.

The Archivum Crocovianum, part of the castle museum, presents the rich history of the von Krockow family, from its medieval beginnings to modern times. Visitors can admire information boards, paintings, books, and original documents that tell the story of family members such as Rajnold von Krockow, Ernst I von Krockow, and the "mad count" Albert Kaspar Ewald von Krockow. Krokowa Castle is also a place for walks in the romantic park that surrounds the residence.
