History and Cult of the Sanctuary in Trąbki Wielkie

monuments

The Sanctuary in Trąbki Wielkie is a center of Marian devotion with a rich and centuries-old history. The parish was founded in 1331 during the Teutonic Order period, and the first church existed as early as the 13th century. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during the Swedish wars in the 17th century. A chapel was erected in its place, and thanks to the efforts of the Chełmno voivodess Marianna Czapska, a new, single-nave brick church was built in 1740, where the cult of Our Lady of Trąbki Wielkie developed. The key element of this cult is the painting of Mary with the Child from the second half of the 17th century, mentioned as early as 1683, which was crowned in 1987 by Pope John Paul II.

The church, originally built in 1628, has retained many Baroque features in its furnishings. Inside, there are an 18th-century pulpit and baptismal font, the main altar, and an organ from 1880. Characteristic architectural elements include brick walls adorned with cornice moldings and window lintels. The sanctuary, belonging to the Trąbki Wielkie deanery in the Gdańsk archdiocese, is one of the most important places of Marian cult in Pomerania.
