Frozen in Time – Reconstructed Post Mill in Ręboszewo on the Kashubian Lands

monuments

Post mills, constructed on the Kashubian lands since the late 14th century, are the oldest type of windmill in Europe. They are characterized by a structure set on a wooden “post” or frame, allowing the entire mill to pivot with the direction of the wind. In Ręboszewo, a historic windmill has been recreated on the foundations of the original structure, where only the base had remained. The reconstruction was made possible by the passion and dedicated work of Kashubian culture enthusiasts, who incorporated elements from other historical mills from Sokółki and Greater Poland.

The windmill in Ręboszewo not only impresses with its appearance but also provides a glimpse into the original milling mechanisms, including the striking wheel, brake, and millstones – though no longer operational, these features can be admired up close. Entirely finished in wood, the structure maintains an authentic Kashubian character, with its lower level adapted for tourists, housing a cozy café where visitors can relax with drinks and enjoy the stunning Kashubian landscapes.
