Fishermen houses in Leba
monuments
By Kościuszko Street and along the Chełst Canal, some fishermen's cottages have survived. They are brick, single-story buildings, set with their gables facing the street, and very cramped. Most of them were built in the second half of the 19th century. An exception is the building at 86 Kościuszko Street, which dates back to 1723. It was built by the merchant and consul Johan Mampe. He must have been a very religious man, as a Latin inscription on the front beam of the house reads: "God is my defender and helper. Lord, I will not leave You, for You bless me" – Johann Mampe, July 18, 1723.
