Defensive Walls in Stargard

monuments

The stronghold in Stargard existed already in the 10th century, surrounded by wooden ramparts. It took advantage of its favorable location on a natural elevation, surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Ina River. In the 13th century, the fortifications were modernized with stone bricks. A wall made of fieldstones, laid in layers and topped with brick, reaching a height of 6 meters, was erected. In the 15th-16th centuries, the walls were raised with a brick superstructure, and the total length reached 2260 meters. 45 towers were added, where the ground floor served as an arsenal, the first floor for the crew, and the second for observation and shooting. Access to the city was hindered by a deep moat, palisade ramparts, and the Ina River. In the 19th century, the walls lost their original defensive character; some were dismantled, moats were filled, and ramparts lowered. Currently, their length is about 1040 meters, and they are recognized as a historical monument.
