Church of St. George in Darłowo

monuments

Near the Wieprza River stands the Gothic St. George's Church from the 15th century. It is a single-nave church whose length is twice its width. The western tower only slightly rises above the roof and has walls more than a meter thick, which accommodate the bell.

The nave walls are adorned with 13 arched windows, with diamond-shaped shields set in lead. One of the windows on the northern wall featured a special stained glass depicting two bears holding the Adebar coat of arms. Below it was an inscription: "Senator Lorentz Adebar 1603" – commemorating the councilor who died in 1628, later becoming a chamberlain and mayor. Another historic stained glass was in a southern wall window and depicted two crossed forks without additional information.

The church formerly served as a hospital chapel and was associated with two hospitals: the Holy Spirit Hospital, which housed the poor and sick, and St. Jürgen's Hospital, which primarily cared for lepers. The Holy Spirit Hospital was run by a female Carthusian order. The church was consecrated in 1502 by Bishop Martin Karith and was renovated in 1599 and the 17th century. In 1623, the bells from St. Gertrude's Church were transferred to it.
