Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Koźliny – A Temple with a History

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Koźliny is a Gothic-Baroque temple located in the center of the village. Built in the mid-14th century of brick, the church has an oriented, single-nave structure on a rectangular plan with an undistinguished presbytery. The eastern wall is adorned with a stepped gable, decorated with blind arcades and niches. The entire building is reinforced with buttresses, and the sacristy, added from the north side, dates from the 19th century. The church tower, built in 1686, is an impressive structure. Its lower, masonry part serves as a porch, while the upper floor, made of a timber frame filled with brick, is crowned with a slender helmet with a ball and weather vane, on which the coat of arms of Gdańsk and the date 1684 are visible. Above the main entrance there is a stone coat of arms of Gdańsk dated 1686. The bell in the tower dates back to 1684, and the wooden entrance doors, studded with nails, are an original element of the equipment. The history of the church is closely linked to the history of the village of Koźliny, originally consisting of two settlements - Koesslin and Jetlun, belonging to the Teutonic Order's komturei in Gdańsk. These settlements, separated by the Motława River, were merged into one administrative unit only in the 17th century. The church, which initially served Catholics, passed into the hands of Protestants during the Reformation and served this function until 1945. In subsequent years, it underwent several renovations, including in 1947 and in 1973-1974, when, among other things, the southern porch was demolished and the eastern gable was plastered. Today, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Koźliny remains a testament to the rich history of the region and a place worth visiting for any lover of monuments and history.
