Church in Szymbark - History and Architecture of a Monument
The Church of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus in Szymbark, belonging to the Pelplin Diocese, was built between 1882 and 1884 as a Protestant church in the Neo-Gothic style. It was built on a solid foundation of fieldstone, on a cruciform plan, with a hall covered by a gable roof. The characteristic brick façade of the building, with arched window groups, a dentil frieze above the windows of the first floor, and semicircular openings, creates a unique example of an eclectic style that refers to Romanesque architecture. In 1945, the church was handed over to Catholics and has served as a parish church ever since. It has retained its original composition and decorations, including a semicircular rainbow arch, a trapezoidal ceiling over the hall, and a dome over the presbytery. Its perfectly preserved structure makes it an interesting example of 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Due to its historical and architectural values, the church was entered into the register of monuments of the Pomeranian Voivodeship in 2016.
