Castle in Łapalice – A Sculptor’s Monumental Vision
In Łapalice, near Kartuzy, a unique structure was meant to rise, conceptualized in the 1980s as an ambitious private castle project with an art studio by a sculptor from Gdańsk, now known as the “Castle in Łapalice.” Originally, the project included a residential home, but it quickly expanded into a grand design. Construction began with four wings, twelve towers, 52 rooms, and 365 windows—numbers symbolically referencing the calendar and Biblical allusions. The building was to include a ballroom, chapel, pool, and wooden finishes with coffered ceilings and sculpted decorations. Unfortunately, the project was halted in the early 1990s due to financial difficulties and administrative obstacles. Today, this unfinished structure has become an unofficial tourist attraction, drawing mystery-seekers from across Poland. Around the castle, which evokes a magical realm, legends and plans have emerged, such as transforming it into a Hogwarts-like venue. Although the area is officially a construction site, visitors enjoy wandering through the ruins and taking photos of this unique, albeit unfinished, project.
